Diferente

La raya se usa de maneras distintas en el inglés y el español. En español, por reglas de la RAE, usamos la raya para marcar diálogos, donde el inglés usa comillas normalmente.

–Hace muchos que trabajas aquí?– pregunté.

Dejamos un espacio solamente después de la raya que cierra el diálogo. En inglés, la mayoría de las guías estilisticas no admiten espacios ni antes ni después de una raya. La excepción es el estilo empleado por la prensa (AP Style) que exige un espacio antes y después de la raya.

Interrupciones se manjan de manera diferente. En español, las rayas indican interrupción del escritor al escribir una cita textual:

«Es imprescindible —señaló el ministro— que se refuercen los sistemas de control sanitario en las fronteras».

Sin embargo, tratándose de dialogo, no se usan las comillas:

—Espero que todo salga bien—dijo Azucena con gesto ilusionado.

A la mañana siguiente, Azucena se levantó nerviosa.

En inglés, claro, se cierran y se vuelven a abrir las comillas en vez de usar la raya en ambos casos.

DIALOGO

“I hope everything works out,” said Lily with a hopeful gesture.

The next morning, Lily woke up on edge.

CITA TEXTUAL

“It’s essential,” the minister pointed out, “that the sanitary control systems be reinforced along the borders.”

Igualito

Los dos idiomas a veces usan la raya en lugar de paréntesis.

Si desea más información sobre este tema (la bibliografía existente —incluso en español— es bastante extensa), deberá acudir a otras fuentes.

También para claraciones o inciso que pueden separse con comas. Y en los dos idiomas por igual se respeta la puntuación del resto de la oración, tal y como si no existiera la frase marcada con rayas.

Esperaba a Emilio —un gran amigo—. Lamentablemente, no vino.

When a document is being written for an audience in the same country, there is no need to specify which country the author is talking about. “en este país” is the most appropriate way to phrase it in most instances. Nor is it necessary to do so when naming national institutions, figures and publications. What would be the point? Emphasis is the only reason that comes to mind.

However, when translating that same document into English, it is usually appropriate to translate “en este país” as “in Mexico/Colombia/Spain/etc.” We cannot expect the target reader to automatically know which country the author is referring to, at least not in the first instance. Perhaps it later instances of the document, the translator could omit the country’s name since he or she already mentioned it in the first instance of this phrase.

National institutions, as alluded to above, may also require the country’s name in the translation even when not explicitly included in the source term. “Tesorería General de la República” should be translated as “Chilean Treasury Department”. (I have seen “General Treasury of the Republic”, but “Republic of what?” is the question that pops into my head when I see it translated that way).

Any of you who have translated any number of translations from Spain will have come across the “BOE” or “Boletín Oficial del Estado”. I translate it as “Official Spanish Gazette” because upon saying Spanish, I am saying that the publication belongs to the Spanish government which, in turn, alludes to “Estado” or “State”.

An interpreter is a voice. The best interpreters practically leave no trace, giving participants a clear voice while neither adding nor subtracting anything — that means gestures and tone, along with information.

So yeah, that means that when an interviewer is muddling an interviewee’s response, the interpreter must carefully and faithfully translate all of it… even when the attempt at deception is obvious. Not an easy task to endure at times, but there are legal repercussions that affect not only the interviewer and interviewee, but also a meddling/helpful interpreter!

And then there is confidentiality. We all sometimes wish we could call a lawyer and tip them off on some massive injustice we just overheard, but that is like playing with fire while holding a jug of gasoline in one hand and a firecracker in the other. So watch out. There are a finite number of situations where confidentiality can be broken. Be keenly aware of what these exceptions are in your country and state.

As for the United States — and this is absolutely not legal advise at all, but rather just information on what the law says — there is one allowable breech of confidentiality we can all embrace:

• By Federal law, child abuse must be reported. So if an interpreter knows of or suspects a child is being abused, then s/he can and in fact must toss the confidentiality thing out the window and report it to the proper authorities.

The way this is done varies from state to state, so check your specific state law for details. It’s at least one instance in which we don’t have to bite our tongue until it bleeds.

La manera de escribir la dirección física de un lugar cambia, desde luego, de un país a otro. Lo más fácil y preciso es dejar la dirección en su idioma y formato original, pero hay ciertos contextos en los que al cliente le interesa tener partes de la dirección, como la ciudad o el nombre de alguna agencia, en su propio idioma. ¿Está bien o mal?

Pienso que como todo lo relacionado con una traducción, depende del propósito del documento. No es lo mismo cambiar de idioma al dirigir un sobre, en cuyo caso es posible que su contenido jamás llegue al destinatario, que cambiar de idioma en un documento que no se usará fuera del país del idioma de destino. En ciertos casos, el cliente batallaría para confirmar ciertos datos sin su traducción. Un buen ejemplo es el uso de colonia en direcciones de la ciudad de México. Lo que para cualquier mexicano capitalino es obviamente un vecindario, pare el angloparlante es un detalle ambiguo.

Es una muestra pequeñita, sólo para darles una idea. Recursos para decifrar tales mensajes abundan en Internet. Sólo basta una búsqueda con el término “chatñol”.

Me pareció interestante ver que el chatñol no es un código exclusivamente para mensajes breves, sino que la gente jóven está optando por usarlo como parte de expresión individual. Encontré, por ejemplo, un poema escrito en chatñol.

Frankly, I like to boldly go… and the split infinitive doesn’t bother me in the slightest. I’m fond of naturalists and have no problem with naturists, though I agree that they are not interchangeable. I mean a naturalist may or may not be a naturist and vice versa. And the notion of tethering the English language… well, that’s just ridiculous.
